I have a 1994 Ranger XLT, std cab, 2.3L, manual transmission...with 10K miles...that I just inherited (yes ten thousand!).

For "fun" I pulled a 97 Exploder OHC, a mustang dome, and an auto-dimming mirror from a local junk yard. For the most part the install went well, but...

My question: I cannot find a gray/black strip wire under the dash any where???

I looked inside the engine compartment and see a gray/black wire entering the main harness in the firewall at the #27 position but there is no wire coming out inside the dash???

Any thoughts on where to tap the VSS wire from the OHC in a 94?

Thanks

i tapped into it after the pcm going into the firewall. It doesn't appear to go through the main harness like you said, but it did the trick for mine. We don't use a GEM in the 94's so you just have to tap it from the pcm.

A family member had the ranger with 10k on it and you got it? Thats a rare gem. Enjoy that ranger. Im expecting around 250K outa mine. Yours has a long life left ahead of it.

If you have cruise you can tap the line at the Cruise Computer, that is what I did.

Yep. Not sure on the Ranger, but on the Explorer you'll find the cruise amp directly above the glovebox. Just squeeze the sides of the box after you open it and it will drop down, then you can look inside and up to see the amp. Green on mine with two (6 and 8 pin, IIRC) connectors.

It's the same spot on the Ranger. If you do have one, consult this wire diagram, because you'll have two Gray/Black wires (VSS and Servo Feedback - Common)

Thanks, Ford, for doing that (made my OHC not work properly for 2 months until I figured out I was tapped into the wrong line...)

Unfortunately no cruise control...

Tonight, I ran the wire out the rubber grommet where I passed the temp sensor lines into the engine compartment and tapped the gray/black wire near the harness. I did not have time to take it out for a test drive, but the console powered up fine after starting...will check better tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice!
