I am new to this site, and had a few questions about my '97 4.0L ranger.

1) The check engine light doesn't come on when i put the keys on. all of the
other "idiot lights" do though. Any ideas?
a. does this automatically fail a smog test in CA?

2) The door chime goes off randomly even when the door is closed, while i am
driving...is there a quick fix to either disconnect the chime itself, without
messing any other things up?

3) The dome lite stays on all the time, so i took it out. The map lights work
though, when switched on (though sometimes they flicker). However, no
lights turn on when the doors are open.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please note that I am not very knowledgable when it comes to car electrical. Any any "dumbed down" version would be great. Thanks guys (gals).

the check light: maybe the bulb is burned
the door chime and dome light, try using some WD-40 lube in your door latches
if u want to disable the door chime, look under the dash under the a/c controls, u will find the beeper there, unplug it and done, but, if u do this the lights on warning will go out as well, try better disconnecting it from the key cilynder, take out the 2 covers from the steering column, on top of the key cylinder u will see a little copper line attached with a little plastic piece, unplugg it and done
hope it ehlps and welcome! :icon_thumby:

which warning light? (sorry i am an electrical novice!!!)

the chime that goes on when u have the lights on, when the truck engine is OFF, if u have the lights on and the door open a chime will be warning u, what i meant was: the lights ON warning.:icon_thumby:
