My youngest son has inherited his older brothers 89 Ranger 2wd. We are going to repaint it along with some other modifications before he gets his license in March. One of the things we don't like about his truck is those awful paddle mirrors. They move every time you close the door. What options do we have to replace them with something better. I would like to use the existing mounting holes if possible but if we have to I can patch the old holes while doing the body work.

Thanks

They have sets of replacement mirrors on Ebay for about $30.00 a set. I bought a set and they are super tight unlike most 20 year old originals. They look just like the originals and bolt in the existing holes. They include the plastic gaskets also. Iv'e had them about 3 years and they are still tight and don't move when you slam the doors.

Thanks. I have looked at those and wondered if they were any better. I will order a set today. :yahoo:

I like that style mirrors better too. I don't have the internal door braces though. Where can I find those? Also do these bolt up to the existing top mounts or do I need to redo those too? Seems like the mirrors should be further forward on the door too.

i bought "sport mirrors" from Autozone, I modified the mounting brackets so I could use the original ranger bolts to hold them on, you can get them in black plastic or chrome. Actually...come to think of it, they don't have enough adjustment to see out of the passenger side mirror when you mount them in the factory location...so I guess that one is more form over function, lol. Its been over 2 years since I drove it so I kinda forgot about that.

heres about the best picture I can give you of them...

I'm currently working on putting 3rd gen mirrors on it.

if you're up for about an hours worth of work, you can fix the stock mirrors so they hold their adjustment better... all you need is a couple drill bits, a drill and some sheet metal screws... (or if you have small taps, drill and tap for 8-32 screws), instructions are HERE, I wrote that like 8 years ago, I think I've adjusted them once since then

I was looking at that before i even read your response. but yea i think the top mounting is the same but i don't think you can buy the internal door braces any were. but if you really wanted too, and was up too drilling a couple holes it wouldn't be too hard to pull them from a junk yard.

I just read your fix and since it is only about 10 degrees outside today is a good day to do a job like this in the basement. I am going out to pull the mirrors now.

Those mirrors look great. What kind of brace needs to go inside the door for those?

I tried to find interior door braces and can't locate any new ones does anyone know who might have them?

I never knew that those mirrors would fit a 1st gen.explorer, maybe a typo. I put some ranger mirrors like that on a beater f-150 once. We didn't use the interior brackets tho, we just used clean self taps.
