Can't remember who it was, but someone posted a pick of the carrier on their 8.8 literally cracked in half down the middle after using a mini-spool. It was about a month ago or so. At least that's what I think caused it. Hell I don't know...
If you know how to weld and either own or have access to the right equipment, then welding your carrier would obviously be the cheapest way to go. If this is your trail-only rig that sees very minimal street time then welding it up is just as effective and strong as a mini-spool, if done properly.
If you're going to pay someone to weld it up or are considering buying a mini-spool (about $200 for the 8.8 if I'm not mistaken), you might as well throw another $100 at it and get a lock-right that you can actually drive on the street on a regular basis. Just my two cents is all
