Hey guys how many miles is it recommended between oil changes with fully synthetic oil? I know its supposed to be more than 3k miles. Let me know. Thanks!

It's not the oil that limits your oil change intervals, its the oil filter. About 5k is all you want to go. If you get an oil filter relocation kit with a dual filter setup, you can go to about 7500.

I used to run 5k on quaker state non synthetic. My step dad runs 8k on the same oil at the moment. Right now I've got a truck thats still in warranty so I use the Motorcraft synthetic blend and run 5k intervals.

Hell I change it every 3 months and its always at less than 3000. Overkill? Probably. But oil is cheap compared to motor problems. Plus I get bored.

I only put 8-10,000 a year on my DD, so I only change it twice a year usually. Heck, I changed the oil in my Mustang for the first time in 2 years a couple months ago. Didn't even have 2,000 miles on it. Since that I've driven it around the block 5 times (less than 2 miles).

But... my wifes Escape gets about 15,000+ per year. Feels like I'm changing that all the time.

Your brand or type of oil doesn't dictate your oil drain intervals, the level of crap getting into said oil does. Stick with the original oil drain interval set by Ford when your truck was built. The engine doesn't care how much you spent on the latest gold plated synthetic oil, the additives that deal with the acids, unburnt fuel and sludge generally are the same regardless of the base stock, as a result the drain interval remains the same. The engine won't run cleaner because you spent more money on oil. I had this conversation recently with one of Mobil's engineers, she was telling this is one of the most common misconceptions about synthetics oils, there are only two oils on the market designed with the sole purpose of extending oil drain intervals in mind.

I agree with this for the most part. However, by oil type someone may be inclined to think putting 10W-30 in some of the newer cars is OK. No way would I put 10W-30 in my F150 or Escape which both have specifications to use 5W-20 (albeit the F150 was delivered via service bulletin). If Ford says use 5W-20, it's best you stick with that grade.

Anyone that would care to read a really nice write-up (haven't read the entire thing myself) on oil, visit here:
