ok so today i got a test back for my calc class.... it was very simple stuff, implicit diff. optimization,newtons method, curve scetching, etc etc.
i get the test back, he gives me an 88% , i compare with the only other kid in the class who seems to be grasping it, he got a 100%, when i compaired answers with him, i realized all our work was nearly identical with the same answers, just different approches,
so supprised by this, i approch the professor about it, and the only one he could aruge with me on was the newtons method problem, as he sugests to use any efficent method possible when solving functions , he was able to acheve a zero within like 3 or 4 interations, my ti83 got it in like 18 which was odd ( i figured calc rounding error) he told me there was nothing he was willing to do,
so it came to me that the test was subjectivly graded.

this stuff really pisses me off. id go complain but i dont want to be singled out anymoe then i apparently already have been (i have no reaison to be, i tend to score 90 or above on everything. im only taking thease at a community college, but from my unfourtante personal experence at the university level they hold the whole program to a assumed department standard, and most of the time the teachers fail to teach to those standards.

what a bummer. its too bad because math is too intresting of a subject to have taught by thease nonsence proffessors and instructors/grad students.

good to see your doing so well at math... hate to say it though, but for someone at a college/university level, your spelling is lacking at best...

either way, go and argue... if you feel you have been wronged, then you should argue for what you deserve...

^ ahaha i was sigged , but ya that is some **** if ya ask me, i mean i can understand why he could of done it as with different variables with the method you where using could have interesting results by interesting i mean wrong but its still wrong that he is not willing to do anything about it in the fact even if he just gave the "incorrect ones (as in the ones you used a different response but got the correct end result to)" half credit would of been good and explain why it is wrong

it was very simple short cuts for instance like not using quotent rule when its not needed but appears to be very trival things. lol. i did things he incouraged. so its whatever i guess not like a b+ is bad. life moves on.
the newtons method still boggles my mind, as interations should be the same all the time but its not like its rocket science to subtract a guess from a Y over Y' function. lol

and yes! i do have horrible spelling, you caught me lol!!!
math and the sciences became my language long ago.
so i can live with bad spelling, but at least its still ledgable! =]

what he did was screw you !!!You should of got an A but do to the fact that you did not do it the way he said and did it a way that work for you that's why you got an 88% not a 100%..I had the same problem because i came up with a method that works better for me and i get the answer faster than the professor could than he had a problem with it and would lower my grade because of it ... I protested the grade but got no where and it just caused more harm more than good!!!!

I sympathyze with you. Math is my life too. I use it every day. That professor needs his @ss kicked. But that is why those who can do, do. Those who can not teach.

I luv two mak fon ov peeples speeling. I usually let it go though because the human mind has the amazing capacity to read through it. Time and again studies have shown that as long as all the letters are there and the first and last ones are correct, the order is fairly unimportant.

As for the math test, go talk to the department head, school dean, etc, you may not get anywhere, but if you got the right answer then you have a duty to yourself to fight for the points you earned. If you get singled out by the prof after that and he is retaliating then he is acting unethically and you can report it, at which point he can be disciplined or even terminated for that.

yeah that is an option, but my brother just went through that situation, and he payed for it lol! it was so messsed up, but oh well, ill stil get an A no big deal. i was just frustrated yesterday. it sucks, if he would have given me a 77% i would have, but whatever.

and as for him grading me down for using a different apparoch, its contridictory to what he says in class! he has literally said more then i can count " my one rule of algebra is use anything you can to get an answer" he just went against his self. which he didnt do on the first exam. so whatevers lol

if the instructions on the test to specifically use the quotient rule, or newton's method, then you have to use them to get correct points.

there are always shortcuts in math, especially calculus and statistics... but if you don't do as told, yeah you should get points taken off.

well it was indicated by the way he formulated the functions, at no point did he specify as to use x method or to use y method in his directions he made me laugh today with it all though, he went on a rant at us because most of us arnt using our brains to solve functions efficently, which was just like wow for me. hahahaha
. its just bogus, good news is semisters out in less then a month now. and ill be going back to the university, hopefully the higher levels will have better instructers ! lol

All I have to say is if you are going to college or university, check out www.ratemyprofessor.com. If this guy is "grade by how I feel or how well I like you" guy, get on and make sure he gets a negative rating. College is not cheap, and I think that ratemyprofessor is a good way to get into the classes you need and get the decent professor.

One caveat: use your common sense on reading the ratings...I have seen quite a few on there that it was obvious the student just hated the teacher and rated him low in every category because of it...
