Manual vs. Automatic GVWR

I'm rather fond of the modded 4r70w that I have. With a tune and a few modifications to the valve body, you'll know when it shifts every time. It's even plain as day when the TC locks up.

I have a great appreciation for automatics. When it comes to shifting, they NEVER miss. They are simple, and effective.

I also have a great respect for the standard gearbox. While I don't often get to use one, yet, I respect them for what they are. A wonderfully beautiful assembly of mechanical harmony.

Except when they don't work correctly or at all.

The same could be said for anything, including a manual transmission.

My 1998 4x4 5speed is rocking over 230k miles on the original clutch. Pulled a 750 lb mower on a roughly 800 lb trailer for three years with my little mowing business, is a daily driver, hauled my step daughter with around 2000 lbs of household items on the same trailer 3/4 of the length of TN, and still shifts smooth, like buttah. Just gotta know how to treat them.

What gets me are the people I talk to (mostly kids) who have a new car and within the first year or 2 they're into a new clutch. I've had a couple of used trucks with over 200k on the original clutch, so failures are not exactly a common issue just lack of skill.

The thing that gripes me about autos is they keep putting more and more electronic controls into them, so its just something else to fail.
