Manual tranny

should the tranny output shaft spin when the manual tranny is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released, engine running? My sons 1988 ranger high rider dropped a drive shaft and the tranny output shaft still spins when engine is on, tranny in neutral and clutch pedal is released. It stops spinning when the clutch pedal is depressed. Dont know much about cars, but this doesnt make sense to me.

yep all manual trans cars will spin the output slowly if there is literally zero load on it (wheels in the air, driveshaft off etc)

Sounds fine, just some drag from the bearings.

While I'm not sure I'd reach up there and grab it (on the odd chance it IS still engaged), it shouldn't take much effort to stop it.

what usually causes it is the gears and shafts are in very close proximity to each-other while rotating in neutral, the oil on them spinning at 1,000 rpm makes enough of a contact to spin the other shaft when there is no load but any load at all will stop it, like previuosly stated usually you can stop it with your hand
