made cowl snorkel

yea im not very worried about the heat on it..but there is already a cover inside the cowl covering it from sucking in water so i was thinking today and was bored so what the hell.i put a peice of sheetmetal over the top of where the vent is a a little farther out to prevent MOST,NOT ALL from going in the spot where the tubne is..and chances are hte rest aint going in the tube.so i shouldnt get any wster iu nthe airbox.hold on i will post pics now

i suggest often to make a snorkel in the way you have with the later trucks....


though i wouldnt use dryer vent personally..unless it was 3 in fan vent in 4 in dryer vent or something. in any case whatever tube type you go with, if used in conjunction with a regular air box or custom filter case it has colder air then underhood ever will, and yours as pictured should have only benefits and no penalty as far as hot air is concerned..


i would take the cover off the cowl...its defeating the ram air effect.

yea you dont think the cover is good.the reason i put it there is to prevent rain water from going in the vent..this is effective..u dont hink its worth it?

rain water always goes in there..and drains..most systems blower air comes from there too.


if you have a proper air box its a non issue...rain water in its natural driplets is fine..the engine isnt gonna suck up enough to worry about...

if the plate is cut the right way and above the floor of the cowl, it wont build up and flood the tube while its sitting out in a monsoon all night. that would be bad and could cause hydrolock issues...but maf usually stops that first if you were to have that much build up...

dunking the hood under water is not something that happens often. my truck pulled from the cowl and still does depending on what setup i am running since i bought it. bout 17 years...never had issues from it.

Rainwater isn't an issue. Take a garden hose on spray and shoot it directly in the intake. Try it. You won't stall the vehicle, and it may not even notice.

The issue is that driving the vehicle through a stream above the bumper will snowplow water onto the hood. A LOT of water. And that plate won't cover it.

As for the "ram air" effect, try not to go overboard. There IS NO RAM AIR EFFECT at any sensible speed. Calculate it. Effective pressure is easy. You won't see 1 PSI boost until you're well over 200 MPH.

i agree with you to a point, i have a cowl snorkel for now, untill i make one to the roof, but i dont hit water crossings fast at all, i have been thru water a little over my bumper and the wave only came up the the top of the grille, but i can see what you mean especially if the water is moving like a river or stream

ok yea i hear ya makg,but as of right now i dont go in water that hard or water that deep,for right now at least this should work.untill i grow the balls to cut a hole in my truck to mount a real snorkel

Then, I have to ask why you're bothering with this at all.

It sounds very much like a solution in search of a problem.

well,i go thrugh allot of mud..and like water high enough that it gets sucked up into the stock air setup,and i usually dont plow in tothe water too much i mean i dont crawl into it but,water usually doesnt come plowing over the top of the hood that much..dont get me wrong it does..but jus not alllot.do u think that this snorkel wont do it for right now?..i mean in a couple weeks i will prob build a full snorkel.

I'd be most concerned about "snowplowing" water over the top of the hood. Induction through the cowl may get drowned. It's not very hard to do that.

the factory intake is an issue there.if you are snowplowing then the intake in the grill is being pressure fed.his duct is better than nothing

yep never had water come out of the heater vents,with a cowl duct set up right so it points up like the blower motor intake and is covered from water falling down, i don't see why it would ever be an issue,and my truck gets lots of water plowed onto the hood.even with my cowl duct partially blocking one drain the cowling won't fill up with a hose in it on full blast.theres no way a few splashes can flow that much water.the cpu is almost on the floor board,thats what i worry about in deep water.
