M5r1 grinding into second gear

Ok so my m50d-r1 in my 1992 ranger is grinding when shifting into second gear does it up/down shifting. Has anyone replaced just the synchronizer for 1st-2nd gear before? I have found rebuilt transmissions for 600-750$ depending where I buy. I'm sure I could replace the synchronizer but if it is a pain to get to then maybe ill just replace it. I found a new synchro for 99$. Any experience would be great, thanks.
