Does anyone have a wealth of knowledge about the m5r2 transmission found in the f150s? I was curious if there is an official horsepower/torque rating for these transmissions. I have not been able to locate an official number, only these specs below:

Interestingly enough, the ranger version (m5r1) is listed with an input torque rating of 331 ft-lbs. See below:

I would think the heavier duty trans could handle much more than that...

They were leery to put one behind a 5.4 (peak torque at 350lb-ft)

But you can see what kind of safety margin they had on the R1.

Yeah, most 5.4s came with a E4OD/4R100. The few I have seen with manuals got a ZF trans. Ford did not want that M5R2 behind the big engines.

I've been running one behind a 4bt probably putting out 350 ft-lbs, only about 150hp or so though. It's in a regular cab ranger.

The reason for not putting an m5r2 behind the larger engines could also have been related to towing, and being limited by the 11" clutch behind large loads that the auto trannies could better handle. Also from a warranty perspective. My truck is no more than 4000 pounds with everything I've added.

Just was curious if there is an official rating for these transmissions, bit I've never seen any documentation.

Looks like the m5r1 had roughly 100 ft-lbs of margin above what the 4.0 v6 could produce (~230 ft-lbs).

I have read that for some stupid reason the F-250LD/7700 trucks got the M5ODR2, probably because the ZF wouldn't fit. I have yet to see a manual F-250LD/7700 to confirm but I would think that that would be the worst possible F-150 chassis truck to put a M5R2 in.

I have read that with heavier trucks (fullsize) and/or extra power the M5ODR2 does not hold up extremely well.

I worked on one years ago, but I never even stopped to notice what trans was in it. It wasn't really relevant to what I was doing.

They also ran a variant of the M5R2 in the Supercoupe. I know the 94-95 was making 330 lb-ft of torque in a 4000 lbs car.
The only real difference between the SC and the truck m5R2 was shifter location and the fiber synchros.

I think they also played with ratios in the SC.

Trucks also eventually got carbon fiber syncros around '00 IIRC.

My '04 trans has them, a syncro kit for every trans but mine is like $40, mine is about $200... win some/lose some :dntknw:
