Hi All,

I've recently replaced my clutch on my 2004 Ranger (@200000Km), and in the process drained and refilled the transmision fluid. The Transmission shifts much more smoothly now, but a low volume whine has appeared and I am not sure what this could be. I've filled the transmission with Mercon ATF as per the manual, it took about 4.5 quarts. The truck manual says to fill up to 2.4 quarts which doesn't sound right as this would put the oil level well below the fill hole used to check the level. Have I overfilled the transmission? Could this be the cause of the whine? Or are these just noisy transmissions?

how did you fill it? there are 2 plugs on the drivers side of the transmission. The bottom one is for draining, the top for filling, the fluid level should NOT be more than at that level. Open the top plug, if fluid comes out, you had too much in it, if nothing comes out, add more.

M5OD's are notorious for whining, but usually due to age and worn synchros/bearings. Does it whine in all gears? if you put in 4th does it go away? Does noise go away with the clutch pushed in? while moving or sitting still?

We need more info. Whining is an awfully generic term.

Definitely overfilled. Not sure how you could get 4.5 qts. in it unless you filled it through the shifter hole. pull the plug and let it drain down. The Ford service manual shows 2.8 qt. capacity.

Sounds like I've overfilled it. Hopefully no blown seals. I will let it drain down and see how it sounds. Thanks everyone!

Did that do the trick? I have a 'whine' in all gears except 4th. I think it might be the input shaft. That might also be where my leak is, too.....

It looks like the tranny is about toast. Which brings up another question, the M5OD-R1 was used in many model years, what is the range of model years I can use to replace a transmission in a 2004 3.0L? Am I stuck with 2003 - 2004?

if you have a wine and it goes away in 4th chances are its most likely your bearings going out if you have a wine and it goes away when you press in the clutch then its your input shaft bearing (the throw out bearing will wine when the clutch is realest) but in Marc_Ds case you over filled it for sure i usually take my shifter out and remove the fill plug and fill from the top till i hear/see oil in the pan bellow then plug the hole and and about half a cup more dont overfill tho cause these m5xx use splash guides to oil the input shaft bearing

There are 2 bearings involved here. The actual cone bearing for the input shaft and the pocket bearing keeping the input and main shaft in line. My guess if any will be the pocket bearing is toast.

Mine only seems to wine while driving and in every gear except 4th. I assume this is fixable now (if I had the money)? How long can they go this way?

It could last you 2 more weeks or another 2 years. It is all how you treat the truck. But with it not whining when in 4th gear your pocket bearing is bad. I believe I told you that I have the parts to fix yours if you need it done, and you aren't all that far from me either.

I've found a freshly rebuild m5OD from a 1995 3.oL, will this bolt up in a 2004?
