M50d-r1 ?

Ok first off I'm new to trs. I have a 91 ext cab 4.0 5spd 4X4 ranger. The tranny will only engage in 4th nothing but fast clickng in any other gear. I got the truck in a trade and don't know if I should just pull it and replace or if there is somethin else it could be. I haven't been under the truck yet. Just got it home yesterday.

Is there any other tranny that will work. The cheapest I have found is 550. I'm on a single dad budget so that's a lil steep right now.

knowing transmissions in general and the M5OD-R1 in specific I can tell you what you'll find when you get it out of the truck and the top cover off of it... it'll be missing all of the teeth off the input gear and the cluster gear will be pretty wrecked.

4th gear still works because "4th gear" really isn't a gear at all,
but rather "direct drive", bacisally a collar locks the input to the output
and everything inside the trans is simply "along for the ride"

I wish I had taken pictures of the terrific shipping method RBoyer used when he shipped me an MO5D. Picture a mini-pallet with a vertical to attach the bell-housing. Tail was lagbolted to the mini-pallet and 4 bolts through the bellhousing into the vertical. It was quite sturdy. The entire transmission was wrapped in heavy black plastic and tape. UPS guy never blinked an eye on delivery, and left it on the porch.
