Low Oil Pressure

After putting on a new oil pan gasket, rear main seal, slave cylinder, and pilot bearing I now have low oil pressure. Before the dash gauge read good but now it sits on zero at idle. I hooked a manual oil pressure gauge up and was only getting 10psi. Does anyone know what went wrong or what I should do next? Thanks.

At idle 10 pounds is Ok if it gains at more rpm. Didja get it up to 2500 rpm and see what the pressure is there?

i agree with big jim. also i hope you didn't let a bunch of old gasket/silicone fall into the oil pan and clog the oil pump pickup

thanks for the quick reply. I think the 10psi was with it revved up a bit and with a cold engine. I will have to ask my dad tomorrow because he was reading the gauge. This still does not explain why the gauge reads low after fixing my oil leaks. I put in a new sending unit but that didn't help. the gauge reads fine when cold but after it is at operating temp. it reads zero at idle.

I used a fel-pro gasket with no silicone. I also pulled the oil pan off and cleaned it inside and out. Along with cleaning the outside of the block around the oil pan.

Is the rear main lubricated by pressure or splash method? If pressure then I wonder if you installed the seal incorrectly and your oil flow is running through the rear main too quickly and bleeding off pressure from the rest of the system.

the oil pressure was 10psi at idle and 20psi revved up to probably 2000rpm on a cold engine. I am guessing on the rpm since i dont have a tach. Also when started cold it takes a while for the oil pressure to register on the dash the engine will start rattling just before the gauge jumps up. This is confusing the hell out of me trying to figure out what is wrong.

i know this sounds stupid but did you get all the oil in it ? do you know if maybe you bent the oil pump pick up reinstalling the pan. by the way how much of a pain in the arse was the job i have to do that to my 99 ranger

yes, i put oil back in. The job was a pain, most of it was because it is a 12 year old truck with 140000 miles. to remove the transmission the y pipe had to be removed which was almost impossible due to the bolts being rusted in place. I also had to unbolt the engine and lift it up about 2 inches to get the oil pan off. I am to the point where i am either going to pull the pan back off and try to find out whats wrong or just take it to a shop and have them figure out what is wrong

Well the problem with my oil pressure has been found. The main bearing were wore and the crankshaft will need to be replaced do to the bearing surfaces being rough. I guess it was just a coincidence that the oil pressure read low after working on it. The only thing that seems weird to me is that my truck only has 140,000 miles on it.
