Loud grinding noise coming from either tranny or diff

I have a 1999 ranger 4x4 5 speed manual. Today I was pulling out onto a street in 1st gear and started to accelerate when all of a sudden I hear this loud gear grinding noise and I lose power to my wheels. Once I put the clutch in. It goes away. It goes in gear fine. If I let the clutch out super slow and give little to no gas I can go forward but once I let out the clutch at normal speed or I press on the gas when moving the sound happens again. The noise sounds like if you grind a gear accidentally shifting but way louder and more aggressive.

I don’t know where to start diagnosing and don’t want to take it to a shop quite yet if I can find out what’s wrong myself. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

you might need a new clutch.
the sound goes away when you press the pedal in because that actually separates the clutch plates, and when you release the pedal, the two plates (metal) rub together. that friction is what turns the transmission. releasing the pedal slowly allows that to happen slower, so not as harsh of a sound. but doing that actually is what ruins the clutch in the first place. ( i think )

Sounds to me like you blew 1st gear. Try taking off in second gear and see if it does the same thing.

Listen to Uncle Gump WWWWAAAAYYYYYY before you listen to ME.:icon_thumby:

That may not be a good guess... I'm still on my first cup of coffee after all.

:pray:You, still are more versed in this area than me, so I would take YOUR advice before I took MY OWN advice.

It's more likely you blew the input shaft. There's been a rash of those lately.

Try in reverse, then try in 4th.

If it makes the noise in reverse but grabs in 4th, you blew the input shaft.

Because no one is getting their transmissions vaccinated anymore!

Thanks for all the input. It does it in every gear. I have my schools auto shop where I can work on in and I pulled my driveshaft and diff cover. All the gears visible but the gear shaft thing (idk what to call it, connects the driveshaft plate into the gears inside the differential. I ruled out transmission problems because on the lift it spins the driveshaft but a gear is slipping bad inside

that gear shaft that I was talking about has a lot of play and my guess is the bearing inside is shot causing it to not engage fully

those normally do have some play. check the ring gear for backlash, that's more important. is the seal leaking?
with the driveshaft off, rotate the pinion yolk/flange slowly, feeling for any catching or clunkyness.

Update: got it fixed. My axles and the inside of my spider gears were completely stripped out.
