I can't seem to find any detailed instructions, on how-to change the ignition switch or key tumbler. The key won't rotate back to acc. and i believe the switch contacts or going. Any help finding the instructions for replacing both would be great.

Take the steering column cover off. Turn the key to "on". There will be a tiny button you push in to release the whole thing and then you simply slide it out. Then reverse the procedure for the new one. Takes about 5 minutes.

It may not be the key cylinder or the switch.

I know on the Gen1 trucks the key cylinder rotates a brass sector gear.
the sector gear moves a linear rack gear which actually moves the linear switch.

The thing is the rack gear is "hollow" because the spring loaded plunger
for the column lock is mounted coaxially inside it...

the rack is made of brittle die cast metal...

Thanks for the help, also the trucks 99 ranger if it helps.

Look under the stering column shroud (the plastice wrap piece) and see if there is an extra hole below the igntion cylinder area without a screw in it (this would be a shroud screw)-if this is there you don't need to remove the shroud, just poke an ice pick, awl, or small long phillips screwdriver up into the hole and hold it there with slight pressure against the locking pin. Insert key and turn slowly to the right, and then you'll feel the "pin" give under the screwdriver, or awl, and about a quarter turn towards the dash you can sloooooooowly pull out the lock cylinder-be sure to insert it exactly as you took it out, and turn it back towards you to lock it back into the column.

**If you find no extra hole in the shroud to start with you have to take it off first***
