Hello all. I am currently looking at a 1994 Ford Ranger http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/1411826666.html and was looking to get some input on it. I have checked it out. It runs well, no funny noises from the engine, and trans seems to shift well. Power feels right in the engine. Trans oil was pink, engine oil was clean, and I couldn't smell any fuel in it. The body was very nice. The steering wheel is somewhat off center, and the windshield will probably need to be replaced. My main concern is that the check engine light is on (the guy didn't mention this in his listing, or to me in person before checking the truck out). Of course he says he had it checked out at Auto Zone, and it is an o2 sensor (Do they even read OBD-1 codes?). I know I can't take his word for it, and wonder if it is worth it to look further into the truck, which is why I post here today. I also know that many things can make an o2 sensor trigger a check engine light (like running lean, running rich, etc) which could probably even be something else. Or, he is just a bullshitter and is selling the truck because it is something more serious. Should I just pass on this truck?

I don't know about autozone, but advanced auto wont read OBD1. they do however sell a scanner for 30 bux, it might be a worthy investment to buy one and scann his truck yourself. On the other hand if you drove it and dont see anything miss, then why not go for it. I wouldnt pay 2600 for it though, not with a broken windshield. Use the windshield and the CEL to bring him down to about 1800. Push him real hard, he's either gonna sell it or he's gonna walk. If he walks, be patient. Youll find better for cheaper. If its throwing lean or rich codes though, it may just need new plugs. Who knows till you buy it and make a project outta it.
