long time ago issue... need new advice

Also, I don't remember if it's been checked before, but is the fuel pump running when you turn the key? When you turn the key to ON you should be able to hear the pump run for a couple seconds then stop. And do you have pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail?

Work On the Truck Starts again

:icon_pepsi:
Hello everyone that was involved in our 3 year project and new members..
Here is a little update on the Mazda b2300 pickup...

After the last messages we got a few years ago we Finally did get the truck started and I would like to thank you for all the help because we could not make it happen without the great members of TRS.. Many thanks....

And now the rest of the story....
after finally getting the truck running and many more things to do to get it road ready I came into a financial bind and the truck had to sit for the past few years but just the past month I been back working on it..
I was disappointed to find when I went to start the truck it would not start :shok: I figured well I have other things I have to do to the truck and then i will work on that later so here is what I have done since reopening this project...

Installed 2 leafsprings ( went from 3 leafs to 5. and wow it sits high)
replaced the 2 gas tank straps.
replaced the rearend diff cover.
installed 2 rear shocks
brakes new all around. (lines included all the way to the master cylinder)
New radiator.
Installed a new water outlet tube ( what a job finding the right one)

Well I think that is about it sorry if i had bored you thus far.

in the past every month i would go start the truck and it always started on the firt crank (thanks to our hard work and great TRS members support)
well last year i did not even get a chance to work on the truck let alone start it.. and when i started working on it again the truck wold not start
I put in fresh gas but I think there might have been a lil gas still in there sitting for the year ( not sure how much) well after many crankings the truck would just not fire.. I injected some starting fluid into the throttle body and it fired right up ( for a few secs anyways)..
I checked the fuel rail fitting and there is NO fuel present either with the key ON or while cranking the engine over.

I still have the bed off the truck and I access to the gas tank I took the 2 blank gas lines off that goto the tank and left the power wires connected I turned the key to the On position and even cranked the motor over and there was NO fuel coming out of the lines on the gas tank.
should there be something comming out of there or if I take the lines off will that cause it not to come out for some reason. Im just trying to trouble shoot this NO fuel thing but I have NO clue about what im looking for or where i need to start.....

Im so sorry for this SUPER long windbagging post I hope in this post you did not get lost I know Im kinda lost myself :)

any help would be great
Thanks in advance
Jay

I'd start with the filter. It's a cheap fix and a truck that old it should be replaced anyway.

When I did the filter on mine the gas that I poured out of it was orange.

Ok I will check the filter I think it is on the drivers side under the door frame.

But a quick question... now the truck has been out of service for a while and i did remove the fuel pump assembly to remove the old gas from the tank and I added new hi octane gas and I still get no fuel..

is there away to test the fuel pump? I hear a click somewhere under the truck when I put the key in the run postion.

remove the pump and see if she got suction, the way i do it

You should be able to disconnect it behind the fuel filter and stick a bucket under the line.

Then have a buddy try cranking it and see if gas comes out.

Try using a multi meter on the wires going to the pump, if they're not getting power it could be the fuel relay. If they ARE getting power then there's not really anything wrong other than the fuel pump that I can think of.

As for the filter, it is on the frame. We've actually got a guide on it in our tech article section.

Also check the inertia switch. Fuel won't flow if it's tripped or gone bad. It should be in the passenger footwell.

Ok guys I was able to work on the truck this afternoon and i did not get anywhere here is the rundown on my day with the truck

I checked the lil box on the inside it had a lil red reset button on the top, well it was not poped out. i did drop it by mistake and at that point it poped out and sounded like a lil marble rolling around it there. Well I reset it and bounted it back in place.

I did not replace the relay under the hood (in slot 23) I had my son turn the key on and off a few times and i felt the relay kick in. I hope that means its good??

I pulled the pump assembly out and I had my son turn the key on and i heard and felt the pump click and that is all it did. me being curious I decided to remove the filter from the bottom of the pump and I looked inside and it looked like there was a little motor in there that should spin to pump the fuel, yjis time i hooked it up directly to the battery I had my son turn on and off a temp. toggle switch this time while looking at the inner working of the pump and what happend next you ask?? Ok ill reveal.... NOthing it just clicked one time... should it spin atleast one cycle anyways?

another intresting thing... I had my son keep toggling the switch to the pump and it clicked on and off and after about 10 or so cycles the pump got really hot to the touch.

I did not have access to a meter or even if I did I would not now what to do unless it was clearly detailed for a newbie.
so to sum this up....
If the relay clicks when key is turned on and off, does that mean its fine?
if the reset button was not poped and when i dropped it and i reset it withouf problems, does that mean its good?
and the pump just clicking does that mean its junk?

Oh I just remembered something after i took the pump off the assembly I blew in the top of the fuel pump line and 3 lil seeds came out and i was shocked they looked liked some kind of sunflower seads or something,, weird
Thanks and sorry I cant help being longwinded :)

Check the wiring to the pump before you go replacing the pump. Quite often youll find that corrosion has gotten to the connectors and theresistance is high enough to cause the pump not to run. If you can reach the pump connector, try sending 12v to the pump directly. It should run. If it doesn't, drop the tank and check the sending unit and the pump.

Ranger/Mazda fuel pump

Ok Guys I did find that the fuel pump was no good because when I put power to it all it did was click once then stopped.

I have a question though, Does anyone know if I can use a fuel pump from a 1997 ranger in the 1997 mazda b2300. they look alike the only diff. i seen was the float being a diff size.

got a very new looking pump from the junk yard and I tested it and when I apply power to it, it pumps right away.. one other small diff. there is no filter (screen looking like thing) on the bottom of it.

the pump assembly number is sp333h and 02557697w
the numbers off the actual pump are as follows
sfp0007
V:179
2708

I hope it will work I could not beleive the condition of this pump when i removed it from the ranger It must have been just replaced before this truck got totaled

Thanks again everyone for the help

I believe you should be able to as long as the tanks are the same size.
Mazda used Ford parts through out to the best of my knowledge.

You should be fine, the worst a different float will do is cause your fuel level readings to be a little bit off. You can always bend the arm to correct it, but I don't think you'll even have that problem.

Well good news the truck is running ( well was) thanks for all your help..
now let me tell you about the "Was"... Well i put the fuel pump in and installed the serpintine (spelling) belt in. turned the key and fired up on the second turn it ran for a about 5 mins then I heard this nasty noise and the truck stopped DEAD!!!!! i crancked it over again and it was really turning hard.

I took the belt off and it turned over and started right up, Well guess what I did wrong, When i installed the power steering pump I forgot to add the fluid and the pump sezied so it looks like another trip to the junk yard.

A few questions
The truck is idling very high taching at about 6000-6500 for a good min or two every time I start it and when it does come down very slowly it get as low as 1k and dies. any ideas what I should look for?

On the fuel pump there is this small rubber piece that looks like the end of a wind instrument reed or a pencil eraser, anyways the one on the pump was really gummy and stuck together so when i tried to seperate it the thing tore and now its a big gap in it rather then a small opening, what is this thing for and could that be feeding too much gas to the injectors causing the car to idle til its all burnt off?

and One last question
I have a chance to get some reall big tires polished allum. I cant remember the tire size but they are from a 1997 ranger xlt. do the fors and mazdas have the same lugnut pattern?

Thanks a million guys
Jay
