Long or short bed???

I would cut the bed down. Gets a better departure angle, and depending on how much you cut it down; it is still quite usable.

This is a friends Ranger before:

that looks like marks old ranger

What is the "optimal" wheelbase? I'm pretty content with 114", and although nice in super tight trails, I thought my B2s where to short. Sketchy on hillclimbs, and hairy at higher speeds.

From what I've heard, 110" to 120" was the ideal range for most offroading.

114 is pretty good imo

Depends on the Terrain.

My Samurai is 80", and my Ranger with tons and 42's is 117". They each have their advantages. The sammi is great on tight trails, and actually hill climbs pretty good. The Ranger gets it's traction from all 4 tires, the sammi seems to transfer a lot of weight to the rear on hills and just goes right up. Turning on a hill is another story though. In the rocks, I don't think it's as big of a deal as people make it out to be. No matter what you have it's going to be right sometimes and wrong others. We have a trail here local to me with a bad section. It's normal to watch well built sammi's and TJ's have trouble, but a stock Cherokee can make it. Just one of those places I guess.

Yes it does, the wheel base stock is too long for tight trails

I do agree, you cant follow dirtbike/quad trails with the extended cabs. Plus they bottom out easier when climbing over steep sections in those tight trails.

Id keep the long bed, unless you are actually going to move the entire wheelbase forward.

I think I've pretty much decided on bobbing the bed with high clearance bumpers.

If I ever do swap in 1-tons, I'll move the front axle forward. But I'll probably use those axles for a truggy build instead, and leave this truck 1/2 ton with its 114" wheelbase.
