I just bought a new Ranger and I wanted to get a locking gas cap since I had one on my old 2000 Ranger. I like to discourage vandals from putting sugar in the gas tank. Ford does not make them and apparently they have not done so since about 2004. Anyone have any suggestions? Where did you find one? Does it cause your Engine Service light to go on?

I picked mine up from advance auto. Made by Stant. I like my toyota version better since the door locks instead

almost any local auto parts store will have locking gas caps in stock. wal-mart even has then on the shelf sometimes.

they do not make the CEL come on.

+1, there very common. I try to avoid going into Auto parts stores because every time I go in, I just keep spending and spending my money.

Just to let you know, the same cap will work on many different makes and models of vehicles. Go to Advance and get Stant part #11510. We usually have many of them in stock.

^^ Parts Guy = Discount :yahoo:

LOL :icon_rofl: Just Kidding Man

When I asked the dealer if they had a locking gas cap for it, they warned that third party caps may cause the Service Engine light to come on and you could fail the emissions test. They recommended hanging on to the original cap in case these things happened.

I looked up the part number (Stant Locking Fuel Cap -Part Number: 10510 or Stant Locking Fuel Cap: Pre-Vent(R) -Part Number: 11510 ) on the Advnce web page ( http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/Pr...=STN&MfrPartNumber=11510&PartType=112&PTSet=A ) and the threads look different on mine. For compatible vehicles they list 2004 to 2008 Ranger. I guess the only way to tell is take the vehicle into Advance and see if there cap threads on. Then only time will tell about the engine light.

If anyone has this cap for the 2004 to 2008 Ranger, let me know if it worked out for you.

Stant should make a product available at any major parts outlet.
And if it makes the CEL go on, take it back, i would think it would make it happen immediately.

i replaced mine a while back i bought 1 with two guys for about $20 at autozone it works great it shouldnt pull a check enginge light if it screws on all the way if it does get an obd scanner and clear it

who wants to put sugar in your gas tank to begin with????? maybe somebody really doesnt like you.

....

I picked mine up at the local Wal-Mart.

Sugar in the tank doesn't actually do anything (Thank-you mythbusters) and the filler neck has an anti-syphon device into it so IMO there's really no need for a locking gas cap.
