Lock outs

[1998ranger]

I have a 1998 Ranger four wheel drive extended cab with the 3.0 v6. When I unlock the hubs in two wheel drive it shakes and shimes when I go down the road. But when they are locked in it drives smooth. Any ideas what is wrong?

Try locking in one side leaving the other unlocked. If it doesn't fix it do he other side. Should help narrow down the problem.
