it depends on who you ask. "live axle" is a term that has grown to describe a lot of different things.
most often its used to describe a solid axle, like that used under the rear of your truck. this axles consists of a housing, which contains 2 axle shafts (one for each wheel) connected to a center differential, which functions to allow one wheel to spin faster than the other (for better cornering).

Look at your front hubs in the center of the wheel. I have to remove a center cap to see mine but if you can see your lugnuts, look for a LARGE nut in the center. If you have that large nut, it is live axle. Ford went to that in late 2000 on Rangers.
If you have a plastic housing-looking thing in the center, it is the stock Pulse Vacuum Hub locking system, which is easily replaced with AVM manual locking hubs, if yours are bad. ~$120, IIRC.
