...My 2003 ranger xlt 4.0 had a misfire last week. I actually thought it might be the torque converter because it was jolting so bad at around 60 mph. The transmission shop verified the tranny was good.
...I decided to change out the coil pack, plugs, wires and fuel filter. The plugs that were in it was ngk's. I put the stock motocraft ones back in. The transformation was mind bogging. I now understand why so many people like the 4.0's even though they are hard on gas. Awesome power and torque!

plugs do matter for these motors... get the oem platinum ones they spec, it will make a difference

but a single cylinder misfire usually means something worse, like a head gasket leak...

....Changing the plugs, coil pack and wires made a noticeable difference. However, the misfire was a result of running a Fram air filter instead of the stock oem unit. Fine snow was getting past the paper and hitting the maf sensor causing a misfire.

Hey, trader. May I ask why the plugs matter so much on this particular motor? I just picked up a ’92 Ranger with the 4.0 and was going to change the plugs over from Motorcraft to NGK...

Thanks. :icon_thumby:

Stick with the motorcraft. I too wondered why no one could provide a valid argument and found out for myself. Motorcraft. Thing was missing with less than 6 months on a brand new set of plugs.

I wouldnt run NGKs on a damn lawn mower.

Motorcraft on fords, delco on GM, and whatever (insert off brand manufacturer here)-chrysler is using this week on mopars.

Plugs make a difference because the ignition system is setup for best performance with OE plugs, as far as resistance, temp range, etc.

I second that ^. I run oem plugs and wires on all of my vehicles and have not had a problem.

Hahahahaha!!! I have similar feelings about Champions, ever since I got a bad one right out of the box about 25 years ago. Drove me nuts and I never bought them again. For anything.

Odd about the NGKs. I know a lot of Toyota guys who swear by them, but I guess if the vehicle really is tuned for specific plugs, then it is what it is.

I see that the Motorcrafts are about 30 bucks at my local parts store (twice what NGKs cost), but after hearing your thoughts on the matter, they’re what I guess I’ll go for. Thanks, all. :icon_thumby:

I wont run champions in a vehicle. However, all my small engines came factory equipped with them so thats what they get
