Linux Users?

I would really like to use linux ( I ran Ubuntu on my old laptop for a while) but as an avid gamer it's just not a viable solution for me. (I know there is Wine but it's not anywhere near perfect or what I would consider a viable replacement for gaming in windows).

Run a windows variant inside linux :headbang:

I have run Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex for over a year now. Never felt like upgrading. It has its drawbacks but I do enjoy using it!

No offense but that kind of defeats the whole point of using a free OS (which is why I would run Linux, I'm weird, I happen to really like Vista which I use and have no issues with stability or hardware/driver/software support) to me as it requires owning a copy of windows still. Especially since my usage is pretty much split between gaming and browsing the web it seem a bit ridiculous to run 2 OS's.

Though I'm not 100% sure of this but as far as I know there is no good way to VM (which is what I'm assuming you meant) and still get reliable (if at all ) 3D support. By all means correct me if I"m wrong though.

i run ubuntu 10.4, debain 5.0, and winxp (itunes only) on my netbook. xp gets slower with time. got debain on my desktop also.

I had 2 Mythbuntu 9.10 computers that I use on my TV's for a media center. I also run a CentOS box in my closet to ssh in from work and to do some testing on. Also have asterisk installed on that Cent box as I am thinking about setting up a voip phone system in my house for fun. I also have Ubuntu 8.04 I believe it is with aircrack installed for wireless fun on my laptop :)

if you do the voip in your house you can use googlevoice and end up ditching your phone bill all together.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS on my laptop. Still working out all the bugs but so far I like it. The one issue I am having is my laptop will not pick up my home wireless. My router is a linksys n series if that helps any.

If you want working wireless, you have to have 9.04. I tried 9.10 and 10.04 with no luck with wireless. Something was disabled after 9.04.

with a vm in linux, and lets say you use a windows variant, that whole OS is going to be installed. Now whether or not you can assign it full access to your graphics card/driver, I dono. But drivers are getting better for Linux. I run my GTX 275 OC without much of a problem. I don't game much anymore on windows because you need a robust system to do the smallest things these days, while my PS3 does it all without any crap required to run in the background. I have no idea why I never went that route before, I wasted a LOT of money in trying to have a decent gaming pc. I'll never do it again... I can't tell you how many BSOD's I've had during important parts during the games due to ATI's terrible graphics drivers (before I upgraded to the GTX275).

Try sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper, then sudo aptitude install ndisgtk.

I believe that is the combination I ran with success.

I have the newest update of Ubuntu in my labtop and it sucks to me because i can't get my touch pad to work with update and i had second pervious version and i love it..

You have to pay your own fine now. LOL

^What he said. :annoyed:

IF you can get google voice.

Google Voice is open to everyone now, since the end of last month.

As for the home voip solution, I have been using it for a while now through GV/Sipgate/Sipsorcery and it's great. Sure every now n then it'll mess up, but hell, it's free. I really like being able to walk in the house talking on my cell, and instantly transfer it to my "landline" without interruption.

As for linux.. pfft. Never had any problems with windows here, and lovin Win7.

Have any of you guys tried the 10.10 beta of Ubuntu? Looks nice. Maybe after school I might try to download and give it a whirl.
