I have a 1997 xlt Ford Ranger 4.0L 28 spline 8.8 Rear axle which they put in all that model year. Ive heard that they put a stock limited slip in some , is this true and how do I know if it has it or not? It is acting like it's open but if the limited slip clutch went out I need to know for sure because i bought a lock rite locker for it .

Lift the rear wheels off the ground and put the tranny in neutral then spin a wheel if both wheels spin the same direction it is LS if they spin opposite it has a open carrier.

A quick test for a limited slip is with both wheels off the ground block one wheel and put it in gear it should want to jump off of the jack when you let out the clutch or give it gas auto. If one wheel spins free the clutches are bad.

Why not just pull the over off and see what is in there?

That's the only real way to know. Also if you do happen to have a worn out limited slip that lock rite wont work. They are to be installed in open carriers.
