Limited slip vs full lock

Well if it has "auto", as in automatic, in the name then it for sure is Limited slip, because it unLocks at some point and then reLocks.
So it is, by any definition, limited slip

As said you can get limited slip differentials that are better, but unless they can be Locked manually and then unlocked manually they are limited slip

he hehe...fair technical point.

limited slip in this discussion... means power wheel rotated

an auto locker lets the non powered wheel spin faster when the powered wheel is actually slipping on the surface.

its the exact opposite of a limited slip.

So on topic, in a 98 Ranger is the front axle limited slip or open?

When I was in the mud all four wheels spun in unison, when I was gently coming up my driveway on the ice it staggered, jumped, spun and ate up my driveway for a quarter turn on all four wheels.

Open on the front. You'd have some traction in mud with all four wheels, therefore they'll all spin until one is totally overpowered. On ice you're going to almost immediately slip on one of the wheels, so it instantly gets all the power while the one with slightly more traction gets none.

That makes sense.

I don't see ice that often in Alabama. Mud is nowhere near as slick.

But ice doesn't usually stick to the underside of vehicle and also doesn't stick inside wheels to unbalance the tires, lol :)

Or if it does, it usually melts off by spring time.
