I never like the look of a reinforcement panel on the outside of the hatch. So when I repaired my 87's hatch I made one to bond to the inside, cut and fit to match all the contours and mounting holes. I have been running my spare now for years with no more cracks. I did not take pics when I originally did this but I will be doing this same repair to my "new" hatch on my 88 so I will take detailed pics so you can see what I am talking about. I've done this to 2 BIIs now and both are rock solid.
