Learning mechanics

Going to the education thing and as recently as i've gone through the process i must say. Its not that theres anything bad about the information the teachers teach us, its just that they are expected to cram thousands of people, countries, battles, wars and government into our head over 10 months. To properly learn about someone like thomas edison could take an entire quarter but instead its crammed into a day or half of a day, thats the problem its rushed. I'm not complaining that school is 12 years but if we want it to be more effective it needs to be longer, but thats why there is college also :D When you're learning about so many things in such a short time they tend to blend together hence why i thought Ben Franklin invented the lightbulb ..... lol

mostly i am self taught. i remember at 12 yrs old my dad handing me a box of brake shoes and told me to go put them on his jeep wagoneer. took me all day, but i got the job done right! he came out to check on me and give me advice a few times. i have always loved tech articles in magazines and web sites like this one. also, a lot can be learned on youtube. my son taught himself to play guitar with youtube! the internet is a wealth of info, just read more than one article to weed out the hack jobs!

At least it wasn't an Easy Bake oven and a Snow Cone machine....... oh wait.

LOL, J/K.

:icon_rofl:

And a nice new pink dress...my sister got the easy bake oven...but she also got a jock strap...guess Santa was a little tipsy when wrapping the presents...

I haven't been in touch with the modern education system but my niece just posted something about her curriculum for Grade 9...it didn't look too far off from what I learned way back when, but I noticed there was no math courses...none! She gets Music (specifically guitar), English, Art, and Science and a few others...I remember History, Math, English, Phys Ed, Geography, Science, and Drugs 101...first and last acid trip...I failed.

I just had a perfect opportunity to practice this topic!

We had our nephews & family visiting, last wknd. Their youngest (14) didn't wanna go shopping. So, instead, we removed my B4000 truck bed. A new experience.

He happily undid every bolt, turn-signal, and wire harness. Hands on. Some tools needed explanation. Eg, socket wrench & how they work, cheater bar, angle-grinder, wire-wheel, jack, stands, etc. He tried 'em all. Jack and creeper-dolly were biggest hits. Even seeing an actual gas tank, or leaf springs, were brand new. He knew about them, just never seen 'em. Hmm. Since we had whole afternoon, I explained some parts of a truck & that replacing parts is how to fix it. Didn't bother with any stuff up front (engine, trans, etc.). Stuck to drivetrain parts below the bed, now all exposed. Had him guess what they do, then showed him. Springs bounce, driveshaft spins wheels, brake shoes stop, etc. He learned fast.

Then came the fun part...

Ever driven a car? Nope! All these levers, pedals & gauges? No idea. OK, they just control that stuff we just learned. Here's how. This lever for those turn-signals, that pedal for brakes. Then, he drove it down our street. (Car, not truck). Albeit slowly. Yay! Now that's excitement! And incentive to learn. It was a great day! We both had fun.

Remember learning how to drive? It's part of wrenching. Reason d'etre.
