leaking oil pan seal

The oil pan seal on my 1994 4.0 ranger is leaking. Is it possible to take the oil pan off (just enough to replace the seal) without pulling the engine?

I believe that this would be near impossible with how the oil pickup reaches down into the pan. If I remember correctly, there are some baffles in the bottom of the oil pan surrounding the head of the pickup. Not to mention the trans needs to be dropped. Makes for a long weekend project. I've got a 92 2wd with the 4.0L. My oil pan has been leaking for quite some time now, and it's really annoying. I'm currently rebuilding the suspension and have the axles out. Looks like the main point that would cause difficulty is that front crossmember...can the front of the pan clear that crossmember at all?

Not without atleast lifting the engine up some, might as well just pull it at that point tho as it will make it alot easier to do the job properly.

I did this to a f-150, undid the mounts and hoisted it up to the firewall- then dropped the pan two inches or so and changed the gasket. It wasn't fun- and hard to keep dirt out. If you go this route steam the HELL out of the lower engine to avoid junk falling into the pan. Ain't saying you can do it, but it is possible on certain vehilces.

Sounds like this is best left to leak until the engine is rebuilt. I hate all the grease buildup, but I'll just have to deal with it I suppose. Thanks for the advice, fellas.
