Leaking fuel after filling up

Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice here.

When I fill my truck up with gas and the tank reaches full and the gas pump automatically shuts off... I have some fuel that spills out from the side of my gas tank. It only happens when I fill the tank to full.

I'm thinking the fuel hose either isn't put on correctly, the seal is bad or the hose is bad.

Whats the most common issue? I plan on removing the bed to fix the issue, but what I'd like to know is: 1) Do I need to buy a new hose or 2) can I re-seal the existing hose?

I assume there is some kind of goop thats on the gas tank filler nozzle that seals the hose to the tank. Does that stuff wear out?

Any suggestions on how I should go about fixing this would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Ya it's pretty common. I had to replace the filler hose on a 92 because the guy had the same issue you are having. Every time he filled it up he could smell fuel. Took the bed off and the filler hose was cracked where it slips over the the hole going into the tank. It's only held on by a clamp. There's a small hose inside a larger hose.

You have a cracked fuel overflow hose. The filler hose is a two part hose with the filler in the center and the outer is the overflow hose. They age, dry rot and crack - I had the factory one do it and then a replacement is now cracking.

There is no sealant on the connections, but you do have to remove the bed to change it out - DO NOT try to use a radiator hose or anything not made for use with fuels. Besides the hose on there has different sized ends. The replacements can cost as much as $200.00 . . .

Good Luck with it . . .

The one I replaced was roughly around $320 if I remember correctly.

Excellent replies, thank you!

I plan on doing the work myself. Is a replacement filler hose $200, just for the part?

Where can I find one at? Is this a part that I can only get from Ford or can I order one from somewhere? Of course I want a direct replacement part.

You can get it from the dealer, some parts sites online and e-bay . . .

THe Ford Dealer here in Fishers quoted me $480.54. and that is for the entire assembly, the metal tube and the rubber hose.

screw that noise...

Thanks again for the help guys.

I was looking around online and I found this for sale:
http://www.thecarpartwarehouse.com/...000-b4000-gas-filler-neck-gfn--3000-item.html

Can someone take a look at that, and see if it's right for my truck? After doing a bunch of shopping around, it appears that a lot of the fuel filler hoses are marked as "will not fit flared side beds".

I have a '94 Ranger Splash, with the flared wheel wells and the little step behind the cab.

Would that hose that I linked fit my truck?

damn tom your havin some trouble with that arent you? didnt you say that you just replaced it?

Go to your local ford dealer, the should make sure you get the right one. In my shop we have 2 fleets of rangers and this is sooo common on the older ones. Depends on the day I think as to the pricing. One day we can get it for $250 then a month later it's $350+... Take all youe bed bolts out of the driver side and loosen the pass side real good, and you can put a jack on the under side of the bed and tilt it enough to get it all.

Good idea with jacking it up.

I was just going to take the bed off though and clean up the underside of the truck. Maybe spray on some protectant or something. it's looking a bit rusty under there.

YES - I wanted to fab a marine fuel hose to fit, but have no way of getting it in between the frame and bed without being crushed. I will have to look for another one soon . . .

only thing I know to do is buy one every 10 yrs or so.... like I said I own my own shop and am "lead tech" and we have 2 fleets of rangers... they all do it about every 8-10 yrs there's about 35 of 'em between just these 2 companies that we work on....all 97-08's now all 3.0's auto 2wd....

Mentalbreakdown00,

When you purchase the new fuel filler hoses, where do you buy them for and how much do you pay if you don't mind me asking, please?

ahh hell. I really didn't expect it to cost that much. I thought Ford's were cheaper to work on than Lotus....so much for that!

Guess I'll just not fill it all the way up for awhile...then once the fuel smell gets on my nerves I'll change it out.
