Language pet peeves- list yours too

My pet peave is the word 'normal'. There is no 'normal', theres 'typical', theres 'about best for the situation', but 'normal' is an arrogant, pushy word. Its meaningless, it means what ever the most powerful in our world tell us it means. And they use it to their own benefit to get us to live in a way that best suits them and their profits. And if you question too much, they'll convince other people that you're insane and then the labeling starts, like 'conspiracy theorist', etc. Anything to leave you down and keep them up.

Also, 'education', which is a very general term, but alot of people seem to think it means 'schooling'. There are countless means of education and schooling is often not a very good one.

How about 'need' and 'want'. We are so quick to use the word 'need', but do we really need everything we claim we do?

Can I hear a witness?...

To quote Winston Churchill, "Ending a sentance with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."

i get times where i have issues but you all can suck it. i try 98% of the time most of the time.

No. With the exception of "with" the ending of a sentence with a preposition is largely an arbitrary rule that even Oxford is ignoring these days because it makes little to no sense.

Furthermore, I disagree with you about the word "normal". If someone brings me their car asking about a noise or something and every other similar vehicle I've seen does the exact same thing, well at that point I think it could be called "normal". That isn't the uber-corporation trying to tell you something and shut you down just so that they don't have to deal with you. Its just a normal characteristic of the vehicle.

Also, "normal" is a drier setting.

Anymore...I started to notice people misusing this word a couple years ago. My aunt does this; I've heard a few other people use it the same way. They say, "Anymore, you have to leave 15 min early because of the traffic." or, "Anymore, broccoli is all I eat." or, "How do you do that anymore?" You can't use "anymore" except in the context of a negative statement! Anymore indicates a CHANGE from a previous condition. So it would have to be, "I can't run 10 miles anymore", or, Can't you run 10 miles anymore"? Above all, you cannot use it to begin a sentence!!!!

But what is normal??? Is 2.9l lifter tap normal? Or is it a typical/common annoyance? I guess it all depends on who you ask, but if everyone has a different idea of normal, what is normal? I think a more accurate term would be 'typical' or even 'common' or what an individual deems as proper.

And the drier setting 'normal', was probably labelled as such because its a 'typical' or 'commonly used' setting.

What about, "In two years, we won't have to worry about Obama anymore"? lol

I annoys me when people say " Would of". It's "would've", which is a contraction of "would have".

Yeah, I'd say thats a positive remark, not a negative.

What about 'used to could'? Like, 'I can't no more, but I 'used to could'.

That is just bad grammar and deserving of derision.

Mostly on Craigslist... But I HATE it when people are trying to sell their items and they don't know when to use sell or sale! As in:
"1994 ranger for sell. Runs great, no problems, need to sale for daughters surgery. 800 dollars obo. If interested call Carlitos at (yadayadayada)"
It gets very annoying to me. Back in highschool it wasn't much better, especially when 75% of my highschool didn't speak much english if any at all. The school actually hired translators...
Not racist, but when I got to other countries, wether it was Germany, Spain, Mexico, and such. I (attempted) did my best to use the language of the Country.

Craigslist bothers the hell out of me. If I find an ad, and they TYPE IN ALL CAPS or don't spell worth a shit, I won't even bother looking at it.
