how come "gonna" doesn't raise a spell check underline? i was not aware that this was a real word, gonna- as in going to.

Just another platform idea to use for when I run for President. All computers MUST have spell check installed!

Only two little problems with that....

1) Most computers and web browsers do have spell check features - just most people don't bother to use them.

2) It still can't catch the problem with using words like then in place of than because the word itself is not misspelled, just used incorrectly.

And we are back to the seat belt argument. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have a way of forcing people to use it.

Also, I frequently use words (especially on TRS) that I know are spelled correctly and the spell checker flags them, OR that I know are spelled wrong, but are darn close and the checker doesn't bring up the word I want.

I don't know how it is in other states, but in PA here the law says that you have to have your seat belt on or you can be fined. IMHO, I should be allowed to chose whether I want to be smart (using the belt) or stupid (not using it). And I don't really care for the required air bags either. I got to experience one going off once.... it popped AFTER the vehicle was stopped. Like getting punched in the face after everything was over. :annoyed:

But I'm getting off topic....

I can usually decipher what someone says, no matter how bad their grammar and spelling. But sometimes I don't feel like making my head hurt trying to wade through the mess so I find something else to do rather than contribute.

I think the public school system holds a lot of the blame for people who cannot spell or use grammar correctly. I want to say that it was 7th or 8th grade when I finally was taught proper grammar. I ended up in an English class with a teacher who had a reputation among students as being a crusty miserable witch of a teacher. For part of the year I was locked in a running battle with the teacher until one day she held me after class and one of the first things she said to me was that she knew I could do better than I was and then she presented some arguments as to why proper grammar is important. After that I became a star pupil in her class and managed to finish the year with an A grade. If you ask me to pick out nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, or any of that, I still have trouble with it. But I learned how to compose a proper sentence and punctuate it properly - which is, IMHO, more important.

After that meeting with the teacher, I had much more respect for her, she was saddled with a tough task because NONE of the other English teachers I had in grade school before or after her ever properly taught English. Which was much to my disappointment because I found that I truly enjoyed writing. Throughout grade school and college I found I have a knack for writing, I could write a 5 page paper an hour before it was due and get an A grade. No sweat. Many of my former classmates still struggle with using proper grammar and spelling.

I also irritated the heck out of my grade school by constantly reading books from the library - checking books out that were "above my grade level." Several of the librarians actually called my parents to complain that I was reading above my grade level. The response was "So what's the problem??" :icon_rofl::icon_hornsup:

I didn't read that whole post because I can't focus on long sections of text on a screen, but this part caught my eye.

I agree 150% here. The school system holds most of the blame. They don't teach the parents while they are in school. Then they don't teach the kids when they are in school. Then you end up with both the school and the parents teaching the kids the wrong thing, if at all.

Hence my desire to write a letter to the Williamsport Area district administration asking for a refund for the time that my wife attended the schools here.

Gonna throw this one in just because I'm watching BTTF. I know that phonetically it isn't wrong, but it's still annoying.

It's a "gigawatt" not a "jigawatt". Thank your Christopher Lloyd AKA Doc Brown.

I do agree with the public school system topic you've brought up lil_blue_ford and adsm08. However, I do also have to argue that the parents share an equal role in teaching their children. My parents were always involved in what I was learning in school. We (mostly my wife) are quite involved in our daughter's education as well. I don't want to send my children out into the world without being able to spell and compose a letter. I see applications and resume's that would amaze you. One guy had a job doing "cumster service".

Things like this are really what made us decide that we wanted something better for our children. The charter school my daughter is attending requires parents to help at the school for at least 40 hours per year. This can be as simple as cross guarding, but most parents get into the classroom and help with the activities. Some of the parents think this is nonsense, but we are very happy to help. Getting parents involved in the classroom, not just at home, is something I believe will aid in a better education for children.

Misspelling and misuse of common words, using words that don't exist, lack of punctuation, and use of double negatives... They all top my list.
I don't think that the teachers are the ones to blame for this. I think the education system, meaning the states and school districts are to blame. In New York at least there is a set curriculum and the state conducts testing at many levels, while this can be a good gauge of how educated the student body of a school is, it can lead to teachers "teaching to the test". In my eyes this teaches the students that they only need to remember the material to pass the test and that's it. In an era where technology is becoming so intertwined with our daily lives, one's ability to convey their thoughts and ideas coherently via text is becoming important.

I agree that the parents are responsible in this too. But at the same time, how can they teach what they don't know themselves. In my wife's case her father was always at work (had 2, sometimes 3 jobs trying to support his family so his wife wouldn't have to work) and her mother went to (and miraculously graduated from) the same half-assed school district I want to request a refund from.

Maybe he was in gay porn at some point. :icon_confused::icon_confused:

Love the double face palm.

I get annoyed when someone "axe's" me a question. I just want to sword them in the face.
