whats wrong with the double cardan?

and i know my dads '85 has a double cardan joint...but i cant remember if it had a flange or a yoke style t-case. i wonder if they ever used both the double cardan and a yoke...?

I think he means the RZeppa driveshafts. The double cardan rear driveshaft used a traditional yoke, and was discontinued at the end of the 1984 model year for Bronco IIs.

FYI, it may be 30mm, but it's recessed in the 1983-84 versions and you'll have to pick your socket carefully (or grind it down) to get that yoke off. There is also a rubber seal under that that you have to work against.

It's the FRONT output that's very different between 1350s and 1354s.

Yep, I knew it had a weird name, guess I was thinking of the wrong thing at the right time.

I had one of them on the B2, but took it off and put a single u-joint driveshaft in place of it.

So if the rear output flange is the same then all you need is the front driveshaft from the donor truck? Are they the same length? I'm swapping my eletric 1354 to a manual 1350 on my explorer. Are the front driveshafts the same length on mine and the bronco ii?

if the rear output flange is different just swap them and use the mating flange because the rear drive shaft is a different length also. as for the front no they aren't the same length because a 1350 had a slip between the yoke and the transfer case the 1354 have a slip in the drive shaft that is the biggest difference in the cases you will need the front drive shaft from the 1350. the length difference is made up by the slips when fully assembled.

Ok one more thing. Is the dana 28 and 35 flange the same? Or basically will the driveshaft from a Dana 28 bronco ii fit on the my dana 35 ex?

that is somthing i did forget to mention you need to measure the dana 28 yokes because they came with a 2 3/4" or 3 1/2" universals on the rangers not sure about the bronco II's.

should be a 3 1/2" but be sure and check nothing would be worse than taking it all apart to swap just to put the old one back in.

going from a d28 truck to a d35 truck is a little more involved. not only do you have the u-joint yoke difference, but the d28 differential isnt as long as the d35....meaning the d28 may have a longer driveline. on top of that, d28 trucks had several different transmission options of different lengths...so if your donor truck doesnt have an a4ld, your driveshaft might be even longer or shorter....it will just depend on your donor trucks setup.

the double cardan drivelines must have come with different attachment methods at different times. the double cardan on my truck uses a flange which unbolted from my 1354 and bolted to my 1350 with no mods.
