*****O.K.....to keep things simple....all of the Driver's side head mod's will be posted in this post*****

The engine side panel has been removed to access the head & header...(aaarrrggggg...nasty looking chrome valve cover!)

100_0660.jpg

the sparkplug wires, valve cover, alternator, radiator support rod, steering rod, & header have been removed...

100_06612.jpg

all the rocker arms, pushrods, intake manifold bolts(to driver's side head) & headbolts have been removed....

100_0662.jpg

the head has been popped aloose from the block.......

100_0663.jpg

the ...(grunnt....grunntt)...head has been lifted out of place & set on the fender....(the only problem was getting the head past the brake lines)...

100_0667.jpg

time to go to SONIC for some food...then start the mods on the head...be back in an hour....

well...I'm back from Sonic, but it's taken longer to upload/sideload/download/postload the photos than it did to complete the head work....

it didn't take much polishing to smooth the ports out--I just knocked the rough spots down.......

002-18.jpg

I replaced all the worn black seals with the white teflon seals.......

001-16.jpg

the driver's side head is reassembled & ready to be re-installed.....................

003-15.jpg

the block is cleaned and the new thin headgasket is in place.....

004-10.jpg

RATS!!!!!

I'm too tired to re-install the head tonite--V.A. meds keep me sane...kinda....but drain all the energy outta me.......

I'll try to finish it tomorrow & take it for a test drive (unless God has other plans).......

It's tomorrow.......I just bolted the head in place...(and forgot that I have 2 meetings to go to today...RATS again)

100_0670.jpg

Let's try again this afternoon.....

well.....I did manage to get something done....4 new 1:6 intake rocker arms are installed along with the original exhaust rockers....

100_0671.jpg

header is bolted in with new exhaust gasket.....engine is running...rocker arms are adjusted..valve cover is re-installed.......it's idling 200 rpm tooooo fast (again)...I'll idle it down after the air cleaner is installed & the idle air screws are adjusted.....

100_0672.jpg

slapped on the dual inlet kaaa-rome air cleaner...(gonna havta modify the inlet tubes so they point forward for cold-air set-up...

100_0673.jpg

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....clean chrome (well--kinda clean)

All I gotta do now is bolt the engine side-panel in place & take it for a spin in the morning....

It's simply amazing.....

I still haven't test-driven the truck yet but.....

When I rev the engine--it sounds like the secondarys are kicking in....

BUT they're not.....

because the carb has vacum operated secondarys which will not kick in unless the engine is under a load

annnd I looked into the carb throat while revving the engine to make SURE that the 2ndarys weren't opening...(glad it didn't backfire!!!!).....

but it SOUNDS just like they're kicking in...

Let's hear it for 1:6 intake rocker arms!!!!!!

Hey DG, what ratio were those rockers to start with? Been keepin' up with this, and love the project, but can't find what you started with.

Yaaaaaaaay for 1:6 intake rocker arms!!!!!!
Good job Toph!

1:5 stock ratio rockers & stock camshaft too...it seems that 1:6 rockers give about .030 more lift (.470 gap) from the valve seats than the stock(.440 gap) ...which gives the engine more pep!

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd...I've put 300 miles on the truck since the driver's side head mod---no leaks/no overheating--I'll retorque all the bolts in 200-300 more miles.

Thanks. Figured as much. That's an old trick, and one of the easiest ways to get more out of an otherwise stock motor.

Keep up the good work. I love the thread, and the truck.

Whelp (well) ......the original disc player nearly caught fire...it was so hot that i had to use gloves to take it out of the dash...

I'm replacing it with a Pioneer single disc radio--nothing fancy--pics later....

the "wiring" was already in place from the last radio.....I spliced everything together......Kinda....isn't purdy...purdy comes later....

100_0691.jpg

I picked up a new antenna from autozone......it works! (hmmmm....screw came loose from armrest)

100_0693.jpg

Now that everything is operating--I'll put the radio in place & install the antenna today....

DeeGee I don't know what you've done, but you sure have done it!

UPDATE:

The engine is running great....the rocker arms need tweeking though since I have about 500 miles on them...

I need to start looking on-line for a conversion kit for the vacuum secondaries.....

Now that the new 1:6 ratio rocker arms are installed.....the vacuum gauge won't drop below 9 psi at full throttle!

I guess that's a goood thing...cause the engine's got a lot more pep.....

O.K. Mr. Holley said NOT to convert my carb to mechanical vacum linkage...it will goof up the primary fuel flow....

so....i bought a kit of assorted springs that change the vacum diaphram "timing"....maybe tomorrow I'll put a "weaker" spring from the kit into the secondary vacum housing....

pics if'n I do it........in this post..
