just how bad is the D28??

Toss that thing in the trash! They're garbage on a stock street rig. I just happened to find a u-joint replacement shaft for mine at the junkyard for $20.. Literally the first thing I changed on my B2 when I got it..

yeah, i figured they were junk, they look weak as hell. i guess ill have to bite the bullet and buy a u-joint driveshaft. weres the cheapest place to get one?? autozone wants $250, broncograveyard.com wants $180 but i dont know if thats with core or not.

just go to a junkyard and buy a d35 complete from an explorer..up he in ohio you can pull one your self for around 100-150$...that will solve your problem.

i would, but since im gunna do the d44 and rear 9'' swap this winter, ill just save my money. and if i was to do the swap, id also have to buy new gears front and rear since "soposedly" there is bigger gears in my BII, the last owner said he put a couple sizes bigger gears in, but hes unsure of what size:annoyed:

I still run my stock D28 with 4.10's and open diff and have only broke one yoke in the 11 years ive had it. Ive started off with 28's, then 30's and now running 35's. As all the others have said, key is to know when to get off the gas. Ive taken mine up some pretty extreme trials before and drove it home. I also carry an extra set of shafts also. Ya i know im pushing my luck with 35's on a D28 and 7.5, but hey its Build Ford Tough :icon_hornsup:

yeah, id say your lucky, i only have 29'' tires and i broke mine pass. side about an hour after i started wheelin'. i was tryin to get over a log, wasnt a big log at all either, well, i got the front tires over it then i gave it a little gas to get the back end over and BAM!!, it was done for.

I've been running my D28 with 4.10 gears and 33 inch tires for the past year or so. It has done alright so far, havent broken any shafts yet. I did break a few shafts with smaller tires but I was considerably more stupid back then. I have thought about swapping to a D35 but I have 3 complete sets of axleshafts for a d28 as well as 2 spare front driveshafts, 7 hubs, 5 spindles and 2 complete sets of beams so I think that the amount of parts I have keeps me covered for a while.

I just broke the passenger side shaft over the weekend with 31's on. The shafts are the weak link, and this time i'm doing the c-clip eliminator trick, something Ford should've done to begin with.

For the rear drive shaft, look for a 2wd auto with a u-joint style in the junkyards. I found one and have been running it on my '89 4wd 5-spd. The length is close enough to work and if you lift you can have it lengthened. If you can't find that get a Ranger ds from a 4wd truck with a 7.5 rear and make sure it has the flanges on both ends. Any driveline shop can cut and balance it for you.
