Junkyard haul! TK trans!

If I am reading this right, the Mitsubishi and TK transmixers have different lengths:

I had read the same thing before and got confused. I have directly swapped the two and had no problems, yet the tech section says they are different lengths. The TK that is in my truck that replaced the 145 says otherwise.

Could be, I have an A4LD so it has never really concerned me...

Driveshafts will give you a little room to fudge too.

Just a small update. Dropped this thing in the truck week before last. Same length as he FM145 that came out of it. Certainly needs a rebuild though. That input bearing sounds pretty nasty at idle. Kinda like a bad rod bearing, until I push the clutch pedal. :p

84 had the TK4's (4 speed) and 85 had the TK5 (5 speeds).

Unless you are strictly talking 4x4 trucks that's not true. My 84 2wd came with a TK5. $wd trucks may have been a different story though.

I have rebuild well over a dozen of these transmissions. First, if the bearing you are talking about is the input shaft main bearing, that is the last part that is removed from the transmission case and the first part that is installed. You rebuild the transmission from the back to the front. Most problems with these transmissions are not the bearings. The problems are usually the input shaft main drive gear, and countercluster main drive gear. I would recommend removing the bottom cover and inspecting the front gear on the countershaft. If those two gears arn't perfect, time for a rebuild. The shifting sequence is first gear is in the back of the maincase, second is next in line third is next fourth is mainshaft locked with input shaft and fifth and reverse are in a special extension housing that is bolted the the maincase. If you rebuild the transmission yourself be verry carfull with the fastners, snaprings, etc. they are no longer avaiable from Ford. All of the snap rings are metric sized and SH heavy duty which means they are thicker than the normal snap rings availble at the auto parts store.

Thanks for the info.
Yeah it's the main input shaft bearing. There was a lot of play in the shaft when I had it out of the truck. I assume that also means the pocket bearing at the front of the main shaft is also probably worn.

I did remove and reseal the pan before installing it. The gears all looked fine, no missing or sharp teeth that would indicate excessive wear or abuse.
I've had to sideline this project for a bit though due to work. I'm hoping I can get it done before winter comes rolling in.
