My guess would be the type of trans he wants to run...

Factory dodge automatic that is behind the 6bt.

I'm in a pickle and need y'all's help...

So anyone who has ever looked at the last few pages of this thread has seen that the former bad ass yellow Ranger that is D-Ranged has been torn down and partially built back with lackluster results...

The 4BT is the engine I want to go with. The only problem is this engine sells for 2500.00 bucks all day everyday. That's just the engine. I can buy an entire step van, but that is usually in the 3000-3500 range.

The problem I have is I don't have $2500+ to drop into this truck right now. School is coming up in 6 months, and my monthly income is going to drop by almost 1/3 and time will be very strapped. So i pretty much have 6 months to fix this truck, or leave it until after school and a new job, which is about 2 years away.

I don't want to wait 2 years...

What would you guys do? Throw a SOHC 4.0 in it from a 2000-2001 Explorer? Throw in a 3.0 to match the wiring and everything for the current cab?
Wait the 2 years and finish it all at once?

The thing is that it will eventually have a 4BT in it. Eventually. In the meantime while I'm in school and saving money, I could install a JY engine that BOLTS IN and plugs right up and drive it everyday while I'm saving. Which was the original plan when i bought the donor truck in the first place.

Notice there was one thing I didn't post above... An Explorer V8 swap. This is more work than I'm looking at getting into. I know how I am, and I will dump tons of money into it, which I don't have and it will sit again. So unless someone offers up a running explorer v8 with harness and transmission for sub 500 bucks, its out of the question. The goal would be to have it running and driving for less than a grand. Total. Not buying an entire explorer for 1500, selling everything i don't need, and keeping what i do, that's not an option. I don't have time/space/money for that. I need to be able to go to a JY, unbolt the engine (with or without motor mounts), take it to my house, and bolt it into my setup.

Its hard to say... u have the sgt to wheel but i can really agree i wouldnt wanna wait too long. or itll keep getting pushed back to the corner like all my projects... id say put the proper motor back in so u can drive it ooor if u can con svt into a v8 swap he seems to get them done pretty quick

Rick's lurking in here as i type... I'm sure he will chime in on a gus guzzler

J, I can get you a explorer V8 with a tranny for right at 500, maybe a little lower (depends on my local yard's prices for complete motor, which is around 300 ish) and we can pull D over to my shop for the engine swap part of it. I can have it done in about 2-3 days, running. The other options, if you want to keep D over there (and if you have the time), is to get either a 4.0 or 3.0. I can get either motor cheaper than the V8, which is just under 200 complete with entire FEAD, engine harness, and ecu. Do you have a trans for either the 4.0 or the 3.0? This would be the deciding factor. If you don't have a trans for either, I'd say go with the 4.0, only cause they're more of them in the junkyards, so getting them, and parts for them(lets face it, parts for the 3.0, especially trannies, are getting harder to come by) is much easier. If 4x4 is not really a necessity, you can run a 2wd trans which should be even cheaper to run. Keep in mind, this is temporary while you are saving pennies here and there to get the engine setup you want. So, if you have a 2wd trans, you could run that, and either look for a 4wd trans to swap it out in a day(basically, use what you have for now), or just run 2wd til the 4BT swap. Also, are you planning to run a manual or auto trans with the 4BT? If manual, I suggest the SBF ZF-5spd, as it will bolt up to the 4BT(with the correct block adapter), and I might be able to source you one from my local yard for about $150...

I say since its set up for the 3.0 just run that for now and save up for the 4bt, so u can get it back on the road.

So how much would you charge to get D running and driving again? Seriously...

Must be 4wd, must be an automatic. I like the SOHC 4.0, but the entire harness would have to be changed as this truck is setup for a 2wd 3.0.

V8 or V6 doesn't matter. I like the sound of a v8, but I like the easiness of a V6.

You know me, we will work it out. As far as the easiness of the V6, it'll be the same work whether I do the 6 or the 8. As far as the harness, since you will go with a manual tcase, wiring won't be an issue, well, for me :D as far as the 2wd is concerned. Here is the thing, you will need a V8 tcase when you go 4BT anyways, and I'm pretty sure you don't have a full size tcase, so what tcase do you plan to go with?

Hold... Let me go see what CheapThrills is running...

LMAO, I would do a 205, if thats not enough, doubler with 205
