Jet chip

How do those Jet chips work? Do they give you better MPG? Can you tell the difference? I have a 97 with a 2.3 in it and was wondering how I could get better MPG. Thanks, jdg

i spoke to a ford master tech about this. i told him that i didnt notice anything when i installed it so i was just gonna remove the chip. he told me that it takes some time for the computer to completely read the chip so you wont initially feel any gains but as soon as you remove the chip, the motor will seem sluggish.

ive heard that some rangers cant even read the chip when you put it in there so there is no change at all. any truth to that?

I'd be surprised if it did much more than change the shift points and turn off the speed limiter.

Being as a gas motor has to run near stoichemetric; where is the extra power coming from? These motors run extremely well and are squeezing pretty hard as it is. A diesel responds very well to the chip because it burns fuel about like a wood stove--there's all the air in the world in there already so the chip just has to squirt in more fuel.

My opinion is that the engine controller is already a high-performance unit from the factory--has to be. There could be a little room to play with in the ignition timing because they like to keep it retarded as much as possible, but not much. I'd spend my money somewhere else.
