I have a 1990 OHV 4.0, I was wondering if the smoke looked healthy. On top of that I've never heard a 4.0 beside mine so I don't know if it sounds healthy or not. It sat for seven years.
This is after idling for 10 minutes In 39-42° weather.

Ive learned audio files cannot be sent here. I will find a way around, like it would let me send an mp4 so I made it into a gif.

So, in all honesty, that doesn’t tell me much of anything. Cold start and idling can often “smoke” because of water vapor from the combustion process. That appears to be a whitish color which is common for cold starts if there’s enough humidity around. When there’s moisture in the exhaust, the only way to get rid of most of it is to drive it and get the exhaust hot. Like take it out on the highway for a few miles or something. If it still puts out “smoke” then, you may have a problem.

The best way to determine the health of a motor is with a compression test. Even better would be a compression test followed by a leakdown test but the leakdown test usually requires removing the valve covers. The poor man’s test is to pull the spark plugs and see what they look like.

Also take the oil cap off and see if there’s “snot” on the underside and open the radiator cap and see if there’s any oil residue in the coolant. Do those checks with then engine off and cold of course.

As far as file posting goes, easiest thing is to put a video on YouTube and post the link in your thread. However, in my opinion, audio never sounds the same played on a phone. So, viewing/listening on a computer with good quality sound card and speakers will be best.
