Hi All

Looking to get into an explorer.
Is there much of an mpg difference between the 94 and older explorers compared to the 95 and newer ones?

It just seems like the 94 body was a bit smaller and therefore would get a bit better mileage.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bill

It all comes down to gearing and driving habits. I think if you stay between gen 1 (91-94) and gen 2(95-01), roughly the same mileage, depending on the gears. I have the super high 3.27 gears in my 94 explorer, and can pull 20-21 mpg on the highway. I'm sure many people have Gen 1's without 3.27's and gen 2's that can give you more info. Good luck!

Depends on where you live too.

Here in the rolling hills of the midwest 16 is the norm in our '94 4dr with 3.27's on the highway.

It seems to me the later ones got a lot more realistic with their gearing options and are more often found with lower gearing.

The '02 (a lot bigger, SOHC 4.0) that replaced it gets about 20mpg with 3.73's and it doesn't downshift at the hint of a hill.

I have a '91 Navajo that gets 22mpg on the highway and I average around 18 with it. It's got a manual transmission, and it's a 2-door.

With my old '92 Explorer, in good running condition, it would get 16.5mpg on the highway, and about 15mpg in town. It ran fine though. I could never figure out why it wasn't better. I know of other '90 to '94 Explorers that got 22 to 23mpg, as well as the same from a '96. I don't know what the issue was with mine.

Mine had 3.45 gears, an A4LD (in good condition), 4 doors, 4wd, and a stock 4.0L V6.

i got a 92 2wd with 3.73's.. and when the motor was fresh i got 24 mpgs on the interstate cruise on 70.. as of now, i get about 20 on the road and 18 in town.

i can't speak of the 95+

My '94 5 speed Sport got 17ish around town, 19-21 on the highway.
