Is the *insert car, engine, tranny* any good?

I was always a fan of the 460....mated to a C6 is pretty bulletproof.

I really like the 429/460 too...
But...
Ive had 2 of 4 I own have had pushrods pop out of the lifters and end up bent. Easy fix once i figured out what happened. And neither engine repeated it.

I dont know. The first one was bought like that. My other i wasnt over revving...

If you've ever seen the pushrod angles on a 460, you would know what happened. Great engine under 5k rpm. You gotta get creative if you want to spin it 8k like we do.

As much as i love the 460....id almost rather have a 400. IMO the 400 beats it in everything but obviously power. Ive had major issues out of every 460 ive had but never had any issues from any of my 400s...and with a lil work the 400 is an absolute torque monster with its 4 inch stroke.

My 97 460 in my F250 is a stout mofo, no doubt. I would of loved to of done some sort of challenge for towing against the 78 F350 i had though. It had a slightly massaged 400, T18 4sp and a 4.30 rear. Nasty, loud, rough SOB (had 14 leaf packs and 2 overloads) but there wasnt anything i hooked it to that truck wouldnt yank the piss out of.

It did top out at 75ish mph, got 6mpg, and drove like shit. But what a truck.

My 97 F250 is better in about every way, but i really would of liked to of seen which one had more full out brute snort.

I’ve always buried the throttle in every car I’ve owned to 100 mph, then babied them for the rest of their life. If everyone did that, there’d probably be more “great” engines. But then there’s people like you (no insult intended) that want to know which engines are truly better.

Back in my day pretty much everything not stock had a small block 350 and TH350 or 700R4 if it was a Chevy, and a 302 w/ a C4 or T5 if it was a Ford...And lots of Muncie 4 speeds with the low 1st granny gear. Good old days...

My parents are looking for a car. It’s between the Taos and the Soul. I and they have tried to figure out what they want. For some reason, those are the options. I think mainly size and gut feeling is the process. After an extended warranty is up on their next car, it’s very possible that that’s their last car, so anyone’s opinion about good, bad, reliability is out the window.

I’ve driven many Kia Soul. I’ve known people who owned them.

Very easy to get in and out of, ok for comfort, decent go go because it’s so small. Lots of road noise and flimsy interior. Not good for long rides.

The one guy I know who owned one needed to have the throw out barring replaced three times under warranty. Another had to have an engine at 30k.


Don’t know anything about the taus. I expect it’s mildly more reliable and more comfortable/ quieter inside.

A lot of people just don't maintain their vehicles and then complain when they break. It's all in the manual. Do the maintenance and many vehicles will serve you well. Granted, there are some vehicles with P.O.S. main components like transmissions, etc.

Or the recommendation for maintenance is so minimal that even with “proper maintenance” you can’t expect reasonable life span without doing independent research to find out an actually reasonable maintenance intervals.

You have a point there. I tend to end up doing maintenance sooner than recommended as a result. Usually based on time instead of mileage.

I'm amazed cars work at all....given all the moving parts and complete disregard by the operator of the tremendous amounts of force and friction associated with them.
