hey all, I have a 91 ranger 4.0 L that I have had since new. in 99 @ 250K I blew the motor in it and stuck in a motor from a wrecker that was out of an explorer. 4.0 L since then I have put another 200K on that motor. 2 months ago I picked up a great little 92 for $400.00 and this motor is tired. I have pulled the motor that was in the 91 (because it seems stronger) today I started the tear down and she is still in great shape. going to redo the bearings, hone the walls, clean the injectors and gaskets; maybe new bump stick and roller lifters, and clean everything.

my main question is, if the motor came out of an explorer did Ford use just a common stock 4.0 liter engine? or did they use a beefier 4.0 in the Explorer? and can anyone help me with these casting numbers for the block?

thanks

A 4.0L is a 4.0L, unless it's the newer SOHC. If it's the old OHC, then yes.

Thanks, I figured they were the same but, I wasn't sure if they made any different 4's.

I am sure there were some machining differences and probably some 'updates' as the newer models came out, but as far as the important stuff, they are the same.

There are year to year differences, but other than that... they are basically the same.
