Is 5th gear gutless uphill with every 4.0?

my 4.0 is only sluggish when pulling my 6x9 trailer, and its mostly due to wind resistance from the front of the trailer,( its 2' higher than the top of the truck cap.) 265 hp out of a 3.5? at what rpm though-6500? ive noticed alot of the time you have a small motor making big #s its at a rpm thats way up there. i d rather have a motor that makes its power at a lower rpm and not have to float the valves before each shift point.

my 4.0 needs to be down shifted when going up hills also. all stock with 265 75 R16s Pro Comp extreme m/t. only got 20,000k so engine is perfectly fine. must just be the gear

i have an 04 4.0 ranger and it does the same thing. but then again ive got 33's on it

I have a 97 4.0 4x4 with 3.73 gears, if done the coke and kept 70+ the whole time, a couple pulls it had to shift to 3rd(it's teh 5 speed) but i have never been unimpressed with this engine. it may not breath as well as the SOHC but it sure feels sturdy and torquey, much more than the 3.0
