Intermittent Starting Issue

I bought my 94 Ranger about 2 months ago. It is not uncommon for it to not start on the first try. Until recently it always started on the second try. A few weeks ago I went to the gym, only about a 5 min drive. After the truck set for about an hour it would not start. After a few minutes I realized the fuel pump was not turning on. I kept turning the key listening for the pump. It finally turned on and the truck started right up. The truck did the same thing two more days in a row and then has been trouble free until today.

Same problem today. No start and the fuel pump was not turning on. I switched the relays around and that did not help the problem. Anyone have any other ideas?

sounds like my problem lol

take your bed off(yes the bed) and then take off the plug on the pump, put a volt meter to it to test voltage. have someone cycle the key. if you're getting 12v then you need a pump. put pump on. problem fixed

it could have been a relay but if u switched relays and there was no difference than a relay is ruled out...just check to make sure that everytime you cycle the key the fuel pump relay is actually clicking over

Had similar problem on my 2000 XLT. First it was intermittent. Gradually over time it got worse. After checking fuel pump relays (switching them), checking fuel pressure (which was good when working) ,voltage from pump, and inertial cut off switch. Finally had local garage perform diagnostics on PCM. Said it was throwing multiple codes. Some codes would mysteriously appear and disappear. I did a web search and found that ford ranger PCM's between certain years had issues with the fuel drivers which was related to cheap capacitors in the PCM. Replaced PCM with one from 99 Ranger and had dealer re-flash PATS info from old one. After engine started right up. I'm not saying you shouldn't check out the basics. But if you do have any check engine lights it might be worth putting an OBD II scanner on it to see what shows up. Also do a web search on the Ranger PCM issue to see if your year shows up. i have a 94 ranger had same problem it turned out to be a relay the EEC relay and fuel pump relay both have to work for the fuel pump to run. also check the voltage at the inertia switch or bypass it. the relays are like 12 dollars at auto zone just grab a couple and replace them the check voltage at pump again and if voltage good the replace pump. good luck took me 2 days realize and repair mine.
