Installing Tranny Solo - Suggestions

I replaced my clutch and all that jazz. Now I have to get the tranny mounted by myself. Any ideas or tricks?

I got a floor jack, some ratchet straps, and a lil muscle. Not an extra set of hands though.

realy thats all u need i put my t-5 in my mustang by my self so i dont see y u shouldnt be able to just make sure u line every thang up. good luck

It can be a pain getting it to mesh, but there's nothing complicated about it. I've done it a couple times by myself without the straps or anything. Usually it takes me about an hour of trying until my arms get tired, taking a break, and trying again until it suddenly goes. Just be patient and it'll work.

which trans do you have, its not that bad i wrestled mine in twice the other day its not to bad to do

You could always recruit a friend who resembles a gorilla like I have. I can do it myself but nothing beats a guy who weights 80-100 lbs more than me and is pure muscle. He tosses the trans in like its nothing.

I used my motorcycle jack to lift the transmission until I could slide it forward far enough to let the front rest on the y-pipe/radius arm mount crossmember. Then I set up a ratchet strap between the frame rails and supporting the back, took out the transmission jack, got under it, and used my hands and knees to finish the rest.

Hell, I just put it on my chest, then roll under there on the creeper, and push it on up there. Ususally with my feet towards the front of the truck, use one foot to push the bellhousing onto the motor while my arms are holding the tail end up. Done it many many times.

Make sure your clutch is lined up first!

Yeah hopefully you didnt throw away that little plastic tool. It is indeed a life saver.

i never use jacks i just bench press it into place ..

I'm recently retired and can't jamb heavy stuff like transmissions into place by brute strength like I used to. When doing the A4LD to M5OD R-1 recently by myself, I bought one of those Harbour Freight transmission jacks (off of Ebay) for around $80 delivered.

The wide stance of the base, angle adjusters, and the easy wheel movement make it a great tool for trans work by yourself. It's also nice to know it's in the garage in case a clutch needs changed in the future.

i bought some bolts and cut the heads off them so i could use them as alignment studs. it worked great and all i needed to do once i got the trans slipped over the bolts was turn the output shaft a bit to get the splines to fall into place in the clutch.

^that's a great tip. I usually just use a couple of heavy duty ratchet straps and my floor jack. It's not very often that I want/need a second set of hands. I prefer to do these jobs by myself anyway.

Thanks for the info. I got it in. Pretty easy. Just rested bell housing on the crossmember near motor, got situated, then benched pressed it up into place.
