I have a 98 with a 5.0, M5od, 4404, the problem that has come up is the transfer case input shaft spines are gone and the tranny output shaft isn't much better. What could have caused this? Lack of lube? Everything was tight and seated properly. I took the case off a aod which has that part lubed with tranny fluid. The alignment dowel is there, I'm at a loss for words and money now since I'm gunna have to fix or replace both. Very, very disappointing I would never dream I would have problems there, has anyone else seen this 'cause I have never seen this happen before..... :( Neil

This is caused by a misalignment between the tranny output shaft and t-case input. This could be due to: warn tranny output bearing, warn t-case input bearing, warped tranny or t-case housing, loose connection bolts, etc.

It's always a good idea to grease up that shaft.

that's what I was thinking, the bearings seem ok, no play, the only thing I can think of is it being off a little when I tightened it up,who knows gotta live with it now, is it necessary to have a gasket between them?
