I have just replaced my clutch and i am putting back in the transmission. everything in place and mounted. I put the inner shifter back in once and couldn't get it to shift which i am guessing it not in right then is there a trick to putting it in right? once it in place should i be able to shift gears with just the inner shifter before i put the actual shifter back on ?

It is very difficult to get the tranny to shift without the shift handle. attache the shifter completely then give it a run through the gears dry style. See how it works, you can always take it apart again til you get a feel for how its supposed to sit.

If you pulled out the stub lever (what I suspect you are refering to as the "inner shifter"
when the transmission was NOT in neutral it's very difficult to get it back in correctly

You need to pull it back out and make sure all the square notches are lined up before you reinstall your "inner" lever.

apparently the stub lever was removed when truck was not in nuetral, and of course i'm having problems getting it back in. what notches are you referring to.

This thread is pretty old and unfortunately Allan hasn't been active in years... miss having the guy around...

Like said you need to get the shifter out then get in there with a screwdriver or two and get the linkages moved that are engaged, there's detents coming in from the side that have to be pressed in assuming it is in 1st, 2nd 5th or R, I've done it but my transmission was out at the time...
