Info on my axle?

I think you just measure the inside diameter of the drum. I may be wrong about this but I think all 28 spline 8.8s (like yours) and all 7.5s have 9" drums, and all 31 spline 8.8s have 10" drums.

Some 7.5s had 10 in brakes, my stock axle had them.

I'd measure yours if you can.

from what i have seen the 7.5 in the 2wd rangers have the 9in drums and most 4x4 have 10in drums but i am no expert just giving you info on what i have seen.

My spare set of drums are 9". They fit both of my trucks, so I guess most 85 BII, 86 Ranger XL and 88 XLT 7.5's had 9" drums. All are (or were) 4x4

I've got several 8.8 rears, all 28 spline with ratios from 3.55 to 4.10, all open, that have the 10" brakes. Think a lot has to do with the load rating of truck.

well, the axle i'm buying is an 8.8, 4.10, from an 01 i think, 118,000 miles for 225 bucks, already taken off the truck, 10 inch brakes, comes with the brakes on there so it wont matter whether its 9 or 10 right? i just hook my shit up to the new axle's brakes

No it won't matter, and you have 10" drums, older 7.5s came with 9" newer 7.5s come with 10" unless its a stripped base model then it will have 9", all 8.8s have 10"

alright, sounds good

OH F#$%, the guy called today and told me it was a 7.5, wow, how do they catalogue that wrong, the search continues!:mad::mad:

Update, If anyone cares. I found an axle on craigslist and it turns out that its the same guy who i talked to about that 8.8 that turned out to be a 7.5 at a local salvage place. That call was made to his work and he couldnt advertise his own personal axle at work and it just happened he had one he was going to use in his street ranger(one i found on craigslist) bought that 8.8 trac-lock and my buddy and me took the axle shafts out and threw them in my old housing. most of the wobbling is gone and i just replaced a bent rim and i have no wobbling anymore! :yahoo:

my 90 ranger had a 7.5 rear end and has 10'' drums stock 4x4.

Word of warning that I think you might have found out. The guy at the "Bone Yard" I go to warned me that a lot of the axles that come out of 4x4's have not a bent axle but the mounting flange, causing the wobble you might have had. Brake sizes do really depend on what drive train and weight class, hard to make a general statement. The wheel studs do vary from one to the other (FYI).
