in Drive or Sport mode ?

I always wondered if the 10 speed actually had 10 physical gears or had faux gears by using overdrive like the 5r trans.

I dont know .....but I can tell you the RPM`s drop whenever the gears change upward

No need to have ten gearsets, I'm sure it engages different combinations to get the ten ratios. But I'd be curious just how many physical gearsets it takes to get to 10 different forward ratios.

Good grief, I thought it was silly when the 5 speed auto replaced the 4 speed auto. The 5 speed seemed to never figure out what gear it wanted to be in. 10????? Why on earth......

On mine with the two gauges, it shows up on the left side of the display in the center of the gauge cluster. Where the icons are. In normal mode, you have to push either the + or the - button for the gear numbers to display. I think, but I can't remember for sure, they display automatically in Sport mode but I only used it once out of curiosity.

OK, I'll give it a try. Thanks

after some testing & finding that it would not always shift up or down depending on speed, I did some research.
found this...https://owner.ford.com/support/how-tos/under-the-hood/transmission/10-speed-automatic-with-selectshift-capability.html#

opinions ?

Almost all manual shift automatic transmissions have nanny controls to keep you from shifting to soon or too late. The manual controls are basically just there for the cool factor not any real functionality.

Well I tried "Sport" mode for the first time a couple of days ago and it defiantly let me shift to late. On the Lariat, the tach is a tiny little gauge in the left side of the little, left information screen. When the stoplight turned green, I floored it. :) I then had to shift my eyes to the left and lower, find the tach, read it and make a decision. Unfortunately, by that time, the engine had already hit rev limiter, and was rapidly cutting power. I believe that is the definition of shifting too late. :(

If I could change one thing about my Ranger, I would swap out the instrument cluster to the more traditional layout like the XLT, which has a truly usable tach 👍

Gauge cluster is one of the reasons I chose an XL with the STX and FX4 package over the other trim models.
