Ignition Switch Issues

I have a 1988 Ford Ranger. When I turn the key to the start position, the truck starts and runs, as long as I hold the key in the start position. However, once I release the key and let it fall into the run position, the truck kills. I've already replaced the ignition switch. What else could it be?

Starter solenoid maybe?

Standard or automatic transmission?

Do the accessories and other electrical devices operate once the engine dies...or do you get a complete blackout?

my ranger is doing the same thing ,4 speed and accesories dont work

What ignition switch did you replace? There's the lock mechanism, where the key goes, and the electrical switch which is farther down the steering column. This is where the ignition wiring harness plugs in.

If it wasn't the electrical ignition switch that you replaced, take a close look at yours to see if it's starting to come apart. Sometimes you can just tie wrap them back together, or just replace the switch, if you find it is bad.

key goes in

Actually my son replaced the key switch today and it is still doing the same thing, he did say where the key switch goes in appeared to be loose, but wasnt sure of the correct name, so he could find a replacement one, is this the actual ignition switch.

Any resolution to this?

92 Auto doing the same. As long as you keep slight pressure towards start it will stay running. If you release, it looses electrical connection and dies.

How hard is it to open up the column?

the switch is directly on top of the colomn. remove the column cover and remove the 2 bolts which hold the column to the dash board, then allow the column to lay down. now you can acces the switch and the lock cylinder rod.
